                                                     Concentration: Self-Discovery

Initially, I pursued this self-discovery concentration because I thought that would be the classical normal idea to go for.  However, as I faced real obstacles and mental hardships throughout my junior year and into senior year, I realized just how much potential this so-called cliché statement has.  Now, with the things I’ve been through with family, peers, and teachers, I can produce a mass of artwork that actually speaks to me.
The first stage of this series of artwork is chaotic and tortured self.  The drawings portray me being tormented by something symbolic or conveying the feelings of chaos within me visually.  These strong feelings need to be delivered well.  Personally, I communicate through pencil stronger than any other media. The pencil is a precise instrument over which the artist can have more authority. Despite color giving more life to a drawing, it fails in comparison to the raw beauty of a grainy, edgy pencil piece. One of my concentration pieces was a pencil drawing of me struggling to break free of a sticky substance.
The title of this piece was “Help! I am Entrenched in Society’s JuicyFruit,” in which the JuicyFruit gum represents the corruption and twists of society. Media is a major facet of society because it influences citizens’ opinions and actions. Although there are positive influences, much propaganda is shown to ensnare people’s mentality. As people get more and more addicted to whatever the media says, they fall into a deep pit. And if one wishes to get out, it is too late. Like gum, one winds up being more tangled and stuck as they try to break free of society’s “JuicyFruit.”   Basically, the initial pieces will exhibit this same chaotic struggle using graphite/ink.
As I continue these pieces, the mood will gradually lighten up.  The meaning of “lighten” for me does not mean my struggles are over.  It simply means that I’ve found ways to alleviate the stress, and I’ve learned to move on, and forgive those who have scarred me.  I will be evolving from a dismal character to someone who pulls herself together in the end.  The media will still be graphite/ink, because I want a constant in my concentration—that the struggles continue but I’ve learned to deal with them.  My facial expressions will make the difference.  Although I won’t break into a full smile (because my conflicts are still there), I will appear more peaceful.  I can imagine the very last piece portraying me walking away, freed from the “JuicyFruit” that trapped me before.
The conclusion is that the girl who struggled so much had a breakthrough.  Cliché?  Yes.  And I’m fine with that.
